uploading images for posting

Dreamwidth does do image hosting. It's not unlimited, but it's a pretty high number - 500mb. Small enough that I'd suggest resizing huge images down a bit before uploading, not so small that I'd worry about ever running out of space if you do that.
Either way, you have to upload your images yourself, and it's a separate step - you can't just drag an image into a post.
Anywhere you see the big Dreamwidth logo (like when you post, or look at your own profile; it's in the upper left) you can get to the image uploader. There are two ways to get there.
The most direct is @Create/Upload Images. It's here:

Once you've actually found it, it's straightforward. After you've uploaded the pic, you'll see where there's a URL you can use to embed images into posts.
There's also a general image browser/manager, but it's not in the same place. Why? I don't know. It's in @Organise/Manage Images:

And again, once you've found it, it's not that hard to use. It's just hard to find. A lot of things are like that in Dreamwidth - it's powerful, but sometimes, it's really obscure.
